Benagil and the coast in between

Benagil is a small fishing village in the Lagoa municipality, part of the Faro District in Portugal's Algarve region.^[8] It sits beside one of the most photographed sea caves in Portugal: a roughly circular chamber about 50 metres across, with walls rising 15 metres to a domed ceiling and an oval roof opening around 10 metres wide.^[9] The cave was formed over millions of years by coastal erosion along a limestone-dominated coastline.^[10] Above the beach the village is a knot of low white houses and steep lanes, with boats still working from the sand.

The village is the destination, but the real pleasure is the coast in between. From Portimão, the sea route to Benagil Cave is 15 km along the coastline.^[2] That stretch takes in working beaches, resort beaches, hidden coves, sea stacks and cliff-top lookouts. The name Benagil is used for several things at once: the village, the beach, the cave and the stretch of coast around them. Out of the river

The tour booked from this site departs from one of two starting location options around Portimão and follows a long coastal circuit before returning to one of two drop-off locations.^[1] Portimão is a practical base; the coast between the river mouth and Benagil is all part of the same 15 km route.^[2] The town spreads along both banks of the Arade, with an old fishing quarter on one side and the long beach of Praia da Rocha on the other.

Out of the marina, the route passes Praia da Angrinha and Ferragudo, then runs along Praia da Rocha.^[1] The big resort beach is backed by a busy promenade, but from the water you notice the cliffs and the solid headland instead. Ferragudo's castle and the low white houses above the river make a good first photograph, and the water here tends to be calm before the open coast begins.

If you are staying further west, boats also operate from Lagos, Albufeira, Armação de Pêra, Carvoeiro and Vilamoura. You can book those from this site if they suit your holiday better. Doing that cuts out a car journey and usually gives you a shorter run to the cave.

Praia da Rocha and the point

Praia da Rocha is the long beach that gives Portimão its holiday face. From the water, the bay runs beneath pale cliffs towards Ponta do Altar Lighthouse, then the route continues past Praia do Torrado, Leixão das Gaivotas, Praia da Afurada and Torre da Lapa.^[1] The sand is fine and pale, and the cliffs behind it are carved with small caves and pillars that only really make sense when you look back at them from the sea.

This is where the coastline turns from resort beach to sea cliff. The rock has been cut into stacks, arches and narrow coves, and the boat slows so you can look into each opening. Gulls and cormorants use the stacks as resting places, and in spring the cliff faces are busy with nesting birds.

The point itself is a good place to feel the change in mood. On one side is the wide sandy bay; on the other, the cliff coast begins in earnest, with smaller beaches tucked below the rock and no road in sight. From there the landscape only gets wilder.

The cliff coast

Beyond Torre da Lapa, the private yacht passes Praia da Grilheria, Praia do Vale da Lapa, Praia dos Três Castelos and Praia da Salgadeira on the way to Carvoeiro.^[1] Carvoeiro's whitewashed houses sit above Algar Seco, a tangle of eroded limestone where arches, tunnels and rock shapes frame the sea.

From Algar Seco the route continues past Alfanzina Lighthouse and Praia do Carvalho before reaching Benagil.^[1] The cliffs here are golden limestone, the water is turquoise, and white storks nest on the sea rocks, a behaviour that has spread onto the southern coast of the Algarve.^[11] The storks are a genuine surprise the first time you see them: big nests on sea stacks, far from any chimney.

Above the cliffs, the Seven Hanging Valleys Trail runs from Marinha Beach to Carvalho Beach and passes by Benagil Cave and Benagil Beach.^[12] If you have time before or after a boat trip, that clifftop walk is the slow way to see the same coast, and it rewards an early start.

Benagil Sea Cave itself

The main event is the Benagil Sea Cave. The interior is roughly circular, about 50 metres across, with walls rising 15 metres to a domed ceiling, and the roof opening is an oval about 10 metres across.^[9] That opening lets in a shaft of light that turns the water inside a vivid blue-green.

It is not a cave you can wander around. As of August 13, 2024, visitors are no longer allowed to disembark onto the beach inside the cave or swim into it.^[3] The practical way to experience it is from the water, with your skipper or guide reading the swell and holding the boat steady while you look and photograph.

After the cave, the cruise continues to Benagil beach and then towards Praia da Marinha, a beach loved for its natural arches, small coves and golden sand.^[13] For many people, the stop at Marinha is the second highlight of the day, with its arches standing in the water and steps cut into the cliff above.
